Why do we have a fixation with fair skin? One of husband’s colleague has gone to London on some training. Her mother came to stay with us for two days ( she is afraid of living alone). She is a nice lady, sociable and good at conversations. I didn’t feel uncomfortable around her. But her continuous bragging of her fair sisters and their fair daughters got to me a little. Then I lectured her on the uselessness of a fair color if one doesn’t have inner qualities. I know it was a typical virtuous talk that I gave, but at least this will stop her for the rest of day from talking about how fair ( and fortunate) the English people are, and how black ( and unfortunate) are Africans.

Update: I was wrong. I had thought that she will be quiet for sometime, but no. Now she is talking about some distant relative who is a widow and has three ” Beautiful, Good Looking, Fair” daughters. Why such prejudice for fair skin? Why do we have bias against black skin? Can such prejudices never be changed?
